This site is a tribute to Bob, who was born in Wolverhampton on February 20, 1942. He is much loved and will always be remembered.
In March 2019 Bob was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and battled courageously for 4 and a half years under the wonderful and dedicated care of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Bob’s first cycle of Chemotherapy treatment was successful and he was in remission but sadly this was short lived as his cancer was an aggressive one and returned after 4 months. Despite that, he battled on, Barts continued to do their best and Bob was extremely grateful of any new treatments which became available to him. 18 month ago he was told Chemotherapy was no longer an option as every cycle he was having was causing Bob to become very unwell with pneumonia and sepsis so his oncologist took the decision to stop the Chemo and continue to treat him with regular steroid courses. But his strength and determination never waivered. A few months past, all the while the Lymphoma was worsening and the tumours growing, and yet another life line was thrown his way by way of another Clinical Trial, one of many he had tried over the years, as well as Radiotherapy, testament to his strength as most his age would of succumbed to such intense treatment, each and every one made him incredibly unwell but never once did he complain or allow it to stop him continuing on with his life, he was just grateful he was given the opportunity of having treatment, of any type and “if it didn’t help him it may help others”.
Although treatment in the hope of “curing” him came to an end the doctors and nurses continued to give palliative treatment to keep him comfortable in the hope of keeping it at bay for as long as possible as they could see he wasn’t ready to give up yet.
It was Bob’s wish to donate money to Bart’s upon being discharged to show his gratitude for all they had done over the years for him and to continue to support such an amazing hospital who we have no doubt, without, he would not of seen his grandchildren grow that bit more, and ultimately that is the reason he put himself through it all.
